ARISE Students are Exploring College and the World Beyond in 2017
In 2017, ARISE is focusing on getting our students out to the explore their world and their opportunities. That means we are expanding our college access curriculum, hosting more college tours, expanding after school college prep clubs. We are also expanding our experiential learning in our PostSession and other classes by sending our students on more field trips to places like the exploratorium and DeYoung museum. We are making sure that all of our students have the opportunity to do an overnight fieldwork during PostSession – from backpacking in Humboldt to a 3 day bike ride in Point Reyes.
It’s not easy, but we have seen the huge impact these experiences have on our students. They are inspired by the opportunities that they find inside and outside of Oakland.

Your contribution helps our students with:
$10 – Pay for transportation for one student to a like the Oakland Museum of California, the Exploratorium, the SF Moma and Academy of Sciences.
$50 – Send one student on a College tour. We take all of our students on a different college tour each year. Students get to feel what it’s like to be college student. It’s easy to tell that it doesn’t click for students what college is about until they actually visit a campus.
$150 – One half of a class set of books. We are always in need of great books! Right now we would like to buy a class set of the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, which the juniors will be reading second semester.
$500 – Buy a laptop for our College Access Center We need more laptops so that we can help students research colleges, write applications, write personal statements, and apply for scholarships and federal financial aid.
$1,000 – Send 10 students on overnight field work like visiting native american sweat lodges where students discuss indigenous or Point Reyes,
$5,000 – Fund our annual college tour for 25 students to visit colleges like UCLA, UC Santa Cruz, UC Irvine, USC.
Interested in giving for something else?
Feel free to reach out to our Director of Operations and Finance, Audrey Blanson to talk about something specific that you’d like to fund. There’s a large range of things that we need support with, like Senior Grad night, after school programs, art supplies, teacher training and materials, student leadership class, school events, and facilities improvements.
With Education continually underfunded in California (44th in the nation), your support is invaluable. While the state of California is on the rise towards more adequately funding its schools, it has positioned small schools such as ARISE to operate on shoestring budgets in order to recover for years of financial stress.
