October Parent Letter

Dear ARISE Family,

We are writing to give you an update on ARISE’s progress as well as ask you to put a few dates in your calendar.

First, we are very excited and hopeful about how the first three weeks have gone.  There have been a few challenges both among students and our facilities, but as a family we have worked hard to move beyond those obstacles and work towards our academic and personal goals.

Let’s Celebrate!

Our first marking period is coming to an end and we have much to be proud of!  Our students have completed their first projects and have produced some amazing work.  Report cards will be coming out and we have reserved the afternoons – 12:15 to 4:15 – on November 1st and 2nd for Student led Family Conferences.  You will still be able to meet if you will not be available during those times.

Join us for ARISE’s next Parent Meeting on October 25th from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm.  We hope to see you there!

We are happy to announce that we now have a working phone line.  After this week, we will not allow students to answer ANY calls on their cell phones.  If a family member needs to reach their student, please call the school phone.  If there is no answer, you may call the student’s Advisor.  In addition, any information about ARISE events will be listed on our website calendar.  Our contact information is:

Our Student Leadership Teams have all had their first meetings and are returning very positive reports.  The ARISE Student Council is working hard to plan our Wednesday Community Meetings.  The Fairness Panel is working to create a structured and supportive place for students to come with issues and will be getting trained in Conflict Mediation.  The Student Ambassadors have already successfully shown their first guests through the school – including Channel 2 News!  We were aired last Thursday night on the 10 O’clock News!

We Need Your Support!

One of our biggest challenges at the moment is Extended Day.  The staff at ARISE High School is in full support of Extended Day and have worked hard to create a structure that will benefit the students. The Extended Day Agenda is as follows:

•    4:00 – 4:15 – Break
•    4:15 – 4:45 – Silent Sustained Reading (students are asked to bring their own books that they are interested in reading, but the staff has books to loan out as well)
•    4:45 – 5:15 – Silent Independent Work
•    5:15 – 6:00 – Group Work

This is also the time when Student Council, Fairness Panel, Student Ambassadors, and Student Run Clubs will meet.  Student Clubs will be open to all students in about two weeks, after Club Leaders meet with Staff Advisors.

Please support us in encouraging students to take full advantage of Extended Day.  If you have any questions about Extended Day, or would like to volunteer, please call your child’s Advisor and we will answer any questions you have.

We would also like to remind you of the Habits that we are using at ARISE High School.  We want to encourage you to use the same language at home in conversation with your children.  These Habits address the whole student and not just their academic ability.  We wish our students to see and realize their potential in school as well as outside the school walls.

Mark It On Your Calendar!

Our upcoming events are as follows:

•    October 25, 2007 – Parent Meeting         6:00 – 7:30
•    November 1st & 2nd, 2007 – Family Conferences 12:15 – 4:15

Parent Meetings will be held once a month on Thursdays.

Please Remember!

If you are unable to make the Parent Meeting, but would like to give your input, please contact your child’s Advisor.  We would be more than happy to share your thoughts at the meeting.  In addition, if you have any questions or concerns, at any time, please contact your child’s Advisor.

Sincerely,

ARISE High School Staff
